Glasgow Dental Hospital and School
Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. Glasgow Dental School was formed as part of
Anderson’s College, Glasgow in 1879, becoming Glasgow Dental Hospital and School in
1903. The hospital and school continue to occupy a purpose-built building completed in
1931, funded, in part, by a local football tournament won by Patrick Thistle FC This tournament raised £819 ->£50,000 present day value. A large extension was added to
the original building in 1969/1970. This extension was described as being in the ‘brutalist
style’ of Melville Dundas and Whitson. The Dental School first awarded Bachelor of
Dental Surgery degrees of the University of Glasgow in 1948. Prior to this date graduates
were awarded the Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS) of the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Glasgow. The Glasgow Dental Hospital and School tie is known to date back to at least the the late 1930s, with no change
having been made to the design.
